Wouldn’t it be great if you could e-mail a company and tell them what you would like to buy and if enough people felt the same way, they would order it for you at wholesale prices? Enter Massdrop.
Started in 2012, Massdrop is a new kind of web service. It’s not a retailer, and it doesn’t have any kind of item on hand to sell you. Instead, it acts as a middleman between manufacturers and customers.
Massdrop is unique also in that it allows users with a common need/want to come together as a group and purchase a wholesale shipment.
Mass Drop wipes out the role of the retailer and allows you to buy goods straight from the manufacturer. What’s available for purchase is completely up to the group – ideas can be discussed among users in an online forum and polls can be created to determine what goods interest the majority. Once a few hundred people have expressed interest in the product, the company organizes the order and shipment is booked and sold at a wholesale price.
The price of the item gets cheaper as more people commit to buying it. It will start at full price, but the price will lower as more people sign up to purchase it.
You can also sign up to buy the item only if the lowest price becomes unlocked.
Products range from cool top of the line acoustic headphones to quality writing instruments, top of the line paper products to menswear and accessories and much more. Products from hi tech to low tech.
Top of Form
Founded by Steve El-Hage while studying at the University of Toronto, he and co-founder Nelson Wu launched Massdrop in July 2012 and the site now has over 1 million active users.
“Members purchase items on our site by participating in ‘drops.’ Each drop runs on-average between 7-10 days and features different price points that will unlock depending on how many members participate— more participant’s means a lower price.”
Rossi has had 3 product “drops” so far this year…Letterpress cards and notes, Creations de Paris and boxed notes.
Here is a sample from the Massdrop site of a drop which just ended: Rossi Créations de Paris.
About Rossi1931
For more than 80 years, Rossi1931 has served as a fine purveyor of paper goods. This family-owned company produces decorative papers, greeting cards, notebooks, journals, and more, and all of it is produced in Italy, where the company was founded by Antonio Rossi in 1931. Originally consisting of traditional Florentine patterns, Rossi’s goods are now offered in a variety of colors and styles.
Packaged in a handmade Art Deco-style gift box, the Rossi Créations de Paris stationery set adds elegance to invitations, thank-you notes, and every correspondence in between. It features 25 flat cards made from heavy cardstock with deckled edges, plus 25 lined envelopes in a matching color. And speaking of colors, the palette seems pulled straight from a Parisian café scene, with soft pastels, creamy neutrals, and bright, fruit-inspired hues—complemented by gold embossed lettering on the box lid.
Note: At checkout, you’ll have your choice of colors: azure blue, bright red, candy pink, cream, lavender, lime, nut, orange, pearl, or pistachio.

Shipping
All orders will be shipped by Massdrop.
Estimated ship date is Dec 1, 2016.
After the drop ends, payment will be collected. To deliver the best value to the group the request will then be submitted to the vendor up front, making all sales final. Be sure to check the discussion page for updates.
When the drop ends, Massdrop sends the exact order to the manufacturer. The product will then be shipped as one order to Massdrop, who will then package it in individual shipments and send those out to the customers.
